These developments show that our sustained pressure has led to cross-party backing for action to be taken against Chen Quanguo, and other Chinese Communist Party (CCP) officials. And yet, there has been very little apart from empty words from our leaders.

17 April 2021: Petition to demand the UK government ban Chen Quanguo hits 10,000 signatures.
26 March 2021: The Chinese government imposes sanctions on nine officials in the UK including five MPs.
24 March 2021: The Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China calls for sanctions on Chen Quanguo and the current Party Secretary of the so-called Tibet Autonomous Region, Wu Yingjie.
22 March 2021: The UK joins Canada, the EU and US in imposing sanctions on four Chinese officials responsible for human rights abuses against the Uyghur people. Chen Quanguo remains absent from the list of those sanctioned. China immediately responds with sanctions on several EU officials.
10 March 2021: Navendu Mishra MP asks the Foreign Secretary in parliament whether Chinese officials should be sanctioned for human rights abuses in Tibet.
28 February 2021: Within a month, over 1,000 supporters contact their MPs, urging them to push the UK government to ban Chen.
28 January 2021: Free Tibet’s petition to ban Chen from the UK reaches 6,000 signatures.
19 January 2021: UK Government narrowly defeats Trade Bill amendment to reconsider any trade deal with a country found to be committing genocide.
19 January 2021: The United States classifies China’s policies toward Uyghurs as ‘genocide’.
15 January 2021: Two new reports highlighted the dangerous and dramatic plunge in human rights standards under CCP rule.
11 December 2020: 11 new individuals added to the Human Rights sanctions list but Chen Quanguo, or any CCP official, missing.
27 November 2020: Free Tibet’s petition reaches 3,000 signatures.
25 November 2020: Free Tibet’s campaign to place Chen Quanguo on the global human rights sanctions regime list launched.
17 November 2020: Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China present a signed letter to the Foreign Office urging sanctions to be placed on Chinese officials.

In August 2016, Chen Quanguo was placed in charge of the Uyghur region. There are now over 1 million Uyghurs in concentration camps.
