Introducing Thermo Fisher Scientific
Thermo Fisher Scientific is a billion dollar US company with offices around the world. It supplies scientific equipment and software.
In 2022, it was revealed that police in occupied Tibet had signed a series of deals to buy Thermo Fisher Scientific products, including DNA testing kits. The latest agreement alone was worth $160,000.
This is not the first instance of Thermo Fisher Scientific equipment being used by police forces to carry out repression. The company’s sale of DNA kits to police in the Uyghur region (Called ‘Xinjiang’ by the Chinese government, but known to Uyghurs as their homeland of East Turkistan) prompted investigations from the United States Congress, Human Rights Watch and the New York Times. The company eventually claimed it had halted the sales, citing “fact-specific assessments”. There is nevertheless evidence that sales continue.
What can we do?
China is relying on international support for its mass DNA plunder. This support must be cut off, fully and immediately.
We need to push Thermo Fisher Scientific and its CEO Marc Casper to do the right thing and halt the supply chain to police in Tibet.
