Boycott Beijing 2022 Campaign Updates

Together with groups around the world, the Boycott Beijing 2022 campaign was launched in May 2021. 

Since the launch, we have seen protests carried out in major cities around the world, calls from governments to boycott the games and debates in the House of Commons, as you can see in our timeline below.

Updates:

4 January 2021: A global day of action takes place one month before the start of the Winter Games.

10 December 2021: Human Rights Day see large protests against the Beijing Winter Games in London. Free Tibet submits its petition to the British Olympic Association.

8 December 2021: Boris Johnson has said there will "effectively" be a diplomatic boycott of the Winter Olympics in China.

6 December 2021: President Biden announces that the US government will carry out a diplomatic boycott of Beijing 2022.

30 November 2021: Our petition urging the British Olympic Association to boycott Beijing 2022 reaches 7,000 signatures.

26 November 2021: Free Tibet and partners hold a mock funeral for the International Olympic Committee outside its headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland. 

18 October 2021: Free Tibet participate in a daring action during the Olympic torch-lighting ceremony in Olympia, Greece. Staff member Jason Leith is arrested.

15 July 2021: MPs vote to pass a motion calling on the UK government to boycott next year’s Beijing Winter Olympics.

7 July 2021: The UK Labour Party call for the UK government and royals to boycott Beijing 2022.

23 June 2021: Global day of action sees thousands of people on the streets across more than 50 cities to call on governments across the world to boycott Beijing 2022.

23 June 2021: Boycott Beijing 2022 global day of action begins in London with a banner drop on Westminster Bridge.

22 May 2021: Free Tibet's petition reaches 3,000 signatures.

14 May 2021: Public petition calling on the British Olympic Association to take a stand for human rights and for the true spirit of the Olympics is live.

14 May 2021: Campaign to demand the UK government and the British Olympic Association boycott the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games is launched.
