Monk dies after self immolation

17th March 2011

Free Tibet has received information that Phuntsog, the young monk from Kirti Monastery who set himself alight yesterday (1), died today at 3am local time. Phuntsog, set light to himself at the crossroads of the main road from Ngaba town to Kirti Monastery.

Free Tibet has ascertained that while the entirety of his slogans were unclear, Phuntsog was overheard saying, Gyalwa Rinpoche (Tibetan name for the Dalai Lama). He was primarily taken to Kirti Monastery following his protest, however, after the realisation Phuntsog was not dead he was taken to the county hospital to receive treatment but later died of his injuries.

Kirti Monastery is now under police guard to stop monks leaving the monastery. Travel is severely restricted within the county as well as access to the county.

More than 40 Tibetans have now set themselves on fire in protest at the repressive Chinese occupation of their country. See the full list.
