Dear Peng Qinghua
On 8 May two Tibetans were given prison sentences in Sershul County, Kardze, Kham (Ch: Sichuan Province) in connection with celebrations of Tibet’s Panchen Lama, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, 30th birthday.
Wangchen (20) has been sentenced to four and a half years and his aunt, Dolkar, one-year and three-months for ‘causing social instability by sharing information’.
We call on you to immediately release Wangchen and Dolkar on the grounds that:
Their arrests, detention and conviction appear to be in response to their peaceful exercising of their rights to freedom of assembly and freedom of expression and they have therefore committed no internationally-recognised crime.
Article 35 of the Constitution of the People’s Republic of China guarantees freedom of speech, freedom of assembly and freedom of demonstration for all citizens. These rights are also enshrined under international law.
