Monk From Kirti Monastery Released From Prison Early
Lobsang Tenzin was sentenced to 13 years in prison in 2011 following the self-immolation of a fellow monk
Tibet Watch has learned of the early release of Lobsang Tenzin, a monk from Kirti Monastery in Ngaba, eastern Tibet. Lobsang Tenzin was released before completing his 13-year prison sentence and was confirmed as having reached home at the end of July.
Lobsang Tenzin is from Shigligabma Village (Tib: ཕྱུགས་ལས་འགབ་མ་) in Cha Township in Ngaba (Ch: Aba) County. The area is historically part of the Tibetan region of Amdo but under the occupation is administered as part of Sichuan Province. He enrolled in Ngaba Monastery as a monk at a young age.
Lobsang Tenzin
He was arrested in connection with the self-immolation of Lobsang Phuntsok of Ngaba Monastery on 16 March 2011. On 28 August 2011, he was sentenced to 13 years in prison by Barkham Intermediate People’s Court.
The court also sentenced him to three years of deprivation of his political rights, meaning that Lobsang Tenzin would see his rights to “free expression, association, assembly, publication, vote, and to stand in elections” curtailed, as well as being subjected to surveillance. It is unconfirmed whether these conditions still apply following Lobsang Tenzin’s early release. Details about his health condition are also unavailable at this moment.
