Gonmo Kyi injured in jump from Lhasa hotel while detained by police
Dorje Tashi's brother and sister targeted in Lhasa, as they are once again denied any prison visitation rights.
Gonmo (Gonpo) Kyi, sister of imprisoned Tibetan businessman Dorje Tashi, has been injured after jumping from the second floor of a hotel in Lhasa, according to sources close to Tibet Watch. Gonmo Kyi was being held in the hotel by police and appeared distressed in videos following repeated obstructions by local officials, which have prevented her from visiting her brother.
In one video, dated 18 August, Gonmo Kyi recounts how she requested permission to see her brother, Dorje Tashi, at Chushur (Chinese: Qushui) Prison. Following this request she was detained in the Yak Hotel, which was formerly owned by her brother before his assets were seized.
“I don’t even have the right to see the prisoner [Dorje Tashi]… Local police dragged me back and forth like an animal, and detained me inside the hotel.”

Videos taken by Gonmo Kyi show several people in civilian clothing guarding the entrance to Yak Hotel.
Authorities continued to hold her in the hotel over several days, with Gonmo Kyi stating in one video that “local police put me in here like a prisoner.” In this same video, several people in civilian clothing can be seen guarding the doors to the hotel.
Further videos by Gonmo Kyi from 20 August show her on the ground, having jumped from the second floor of the hotel, as individuals who appear to be medical personnel instruct bystanders not to film or take photographs.
While on the ground, she continued to film, explaining: “Lhasa city officials have put a black hat on an innocent person, and are ending his life in prison. Even though the country’s constitution clearly states that family members have the right to visit prisoners, I haven’t been allowed. So I am desperate, and I jumped.”
In videos taken 20 August 2025, Gonmo Kyi can be seen lying on the ground following her jump from the Yak Hotel. She states to the camera that she has injuries to her arms, legs, and waist. Medical personnel stand over her and order bystanders not to film or take photographs.
Formerly a successful businessman, Gonmo Kyi’s brother, Dorje Tashi, was arrested in 2008 on charges that were allegedly fabricated by senior Chinese Communist Party officials. Following his arrest, he has endured extreme torture and mistreatment, and his family fear that his life may be at risk.
Gonmo Kyi’s desperate act highlights years of systematic denial of visitation rights to Dorje Tashi’s family. Prison authorities have repeatedly blocked family members from seeing the 51-year-old, and Gonmo Kyi herself has been subjected to police harassment, violence, and detention while protesting for his release.
