Photographs of Tibetan shot dead by Chinese security forces

Friday, 1 June 2012

Free Tibet has received pictures (1) of the body of a young Tibetan who was shot dead when Chinese state security forces opened fire on Tibetans (2) in Barma Township, Eastern Tibet (3) in January. The picture we are releasing shows that Urgen sustained a head injury.
Urgen was shot dead by state security forces when he tried, alongside many fellow-townspeople, to prevent his friend Tharpa from being arrested. Tharpa was being pursued by the authorities because he had posted leaflets in the town claiming that self-immolations would continue until Tibet is free.

There have been four fatal self-immolations in Barma since Tharpa posted his leaflets. The most recent occurred only two days ago when a mother of three, Rechok, set fire to herself in protest at China’s occupation (4).

Free Tibet Director Stephanie Brigden commented:

“Rechok's extraordinary act of rejection of Chinese rule and her death only serve to reinforce Tharpa's message.”
