Free Tibet press release

Two young Tibetan laymen, Nyawang Norpal, 22, and Tenzin Kaldrup, 24, set fire to themselves at approximately 3:30pm local time in Zathod Township, Tridu County, Eastern Tibet (2). Tenzin Kaldrup died at the scene and Nyawang Norpal’s condition is described as critical. Both have been taken to the local Zilkar monastery.

Nyawang Norpal and Tenzin Kaldrup left a letter saying that they were setting fire to themselves for the sake of all Tibetans and calling for solidarity amongst Tibetans.

Free Tibet Director Stephanie Brigden commented:

“Tibetans are giving their lives to highlight the horror of life under Chinese rule and yet the international community remains mute. We must break this shameful silence.”
