Fatal self-immolation in Tibet

Ninth fire protest of 2014

On 16 December 2014 at around 9am local time Sangyal Khar, aged 34, self-immolated in front of the police station at Amchok, Sangchu County, Kanlho Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in eastern Tibet. He died at the scene.
Police arrived shortly after the self-immolation and forcibly removed his body.

Sangyal Khar was the father of two daughters. He was from Khyungri Thang village.

Sanghyal Khar is the first Tibetan to self-immolate since 17 September this year – the previous self-immolation also took place in Kanlho (2).132 confirmed self-immolations have taken place inside Tibet, with a further two deaths by fire thought to be as a result of self-immolation (3).
