Status: sentenced to five years in prison
Shawo Tashi is a popular musician from the town of Dowa in Rebkong County, North-eastern Tibet.
In November 2012 he was arrested and secretly sentenced to five years in prison.
In April 2014, the UN forced China to reveal details of his conviction. He was sentenced for "seditiously splitting the state".
Shawo’s album Faraway Father, a reference to the exiled Tibetan leader the Dalai Lama and containing several songs expressing a yearning to see and be blessed by him, has became very popular in the region.
It also features several songs calling for the preservation of the Tibetan language, protection of the environment and the unity of the Tibetan people..
He is currently being held in a prison in Siling, the provincial capital of Qinghai.
